Handwriting
“Handwriting is the visible expression of thought.” — William James

At WHPS we use the Nelson Handwriting scheme to support the teaching and learning of handwriting.
We believe that fluent, legible handwriting is an important life skill. Confident handwriting supports children to communicate their ideas clearly and take pride in the presentation of their work. A consistent approach to handwriting supports strong foundations in literacy and enables pupils to focus on higher-level writing skills
We teach handwriting using the Oxford University Press Nelson Handwriting scheme, which provides a structured and progressive approach from early letter formation through to fluent, joined handwriting. Lessons focus on developing correct posture, pencil grip, letter formation, sizing, spacing and consistency.
As pupils become more fluent and automatic in handwriting, they are able to focus more fully on writing composition, vocabulary choice and spelling. Our aim is for every child to develop handwriting that is neat, accurate and increasingly fluent, enabling them to record their learning confidently across the curriculum.
