Assessment

Assessment in the Early Years Foundation Stage

We use SeeSaw to record our children’s knowledge, skills and learning dispositions. It is a consistent and reliable way of demonstrating progress through the EYFS.

Through daily observation and interaction, we are able to build a rich and accurate understanding of each child across all aspects of learning and development. Our assessments are meaningful and impact on our children’s learning and development as we use them to inform our children’s next steps which are personalised and challenging. Our observations then inform the assessments we make on Tapestry. We bring our knowledge of a child together to make a summative assessment about where they are in relation to key developmental milestones.

Assessment of the National Curriculum Subjects: Years 1 - 6

National Curriculum subjects are assessed using Insight Tracking. Teacher assessments draw upon a range of formative and summative evidence to assess pupils’ attainment in Reading, Writing and Mathematics each term. This approach allows pupils time to embed learning in their long-term memory and enables teachers to identify securely what pupils know, understand and can do.
Quest Assessments are used at baseline and during the autumn, spring and summer terms to track pupils’ attainment in the core subjects and monitor pupil wellbeing. Gap analysis, attainment reports and progress reports are used to identify strengths, gaps in knowledge and areas requiring further development. Teachers use this information to inform future curriculum planning, adapt teaching and plan appropriate individual support for pupils. This ensures that teaching and provision are carefully tailored to address identified needs and support all pupils to make progress.

Statutory Assessments

Year 1 Phonics Check

The phonics screening check is administered to children in June of Year 1 and then again to children in Year 2 if they did not meet the required standard in Year 1.

The phonics screening check is a short, light-touch assessment to confirm whether individual children have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard and is administered on a one- to- one basis by the child’s class teacher. It will identify the children who need extra help so they are given support to improve their reading skills. They will then be able to retake the check so that the school can track their progress until they are able to decode. It is reported to parents in the child’s end of year report whether their child has met the age related expectations in phonics.

A workshop for Year 1 parents each year will provide detailed information relating to this assessment and on how you can support your child.

SATs - End of Key Stage 1 (Year 2) and End of Key Stage 2 (Year 6)

Pupils in Years 2 and 6 are assessed through Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs) during the summer term to confirm whether individual pupils have achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and maths. Parent meetings in the spring term will provide detailed information relating to these assessments and on how you can support your child. Good attendance, punctuality and parental support with home learning are all crucial in ensuring that our pupils achieve their best possible outcomes.

Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check

From the 2019/20 academic year onwards, all state-funded maintained schools and academies (including free schools) in England will be required to administer an online multiplication tables check (MTC) to Year 4 pupils.

The NATIONAL CURRICULUM specifies that pupils should be taught to recall the multiplication tables up to and including 12 × 12 by the end of year 4.

The purpose of the MTC is to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables fluently, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It will help schools to identify pupils who have not yet mastered their times tables, so that additional support can be provided.

Schools will have a 3-week window to administer the MTC. Teachers will have the flexibility to administer the check to individual pupils, small groups or a whole class at the same time.

This will take place between Monday 1st June 2026 and Friday 12th June 2026.
